In ecology, the sequence of organisms through
which energy and other nutrients are
successively transferred. Since many
organisms feed at several different levels
(for example, omnivores feed on both fruit
and meat), the relationships often form a
complex web rather than a simple chain. See
also ecosystem and heterotroph. The sequence
of the food chain comprises the autotrophs,
or primary producers, principally plants and
photosynthetic microorganisms; the herbivores
that feed on them; the carnivores that feed
on the herbivores; and the decomposers that
break down the dead bodies and waste products
of all three groups, ready for recycling.
